This week's storage news in brief:
The Series 9 supports NFS and CIFS protocols, and Panasas claims it can deliver 80,000 NFS operations per second and 6 Gbps throughput. The clustered system supports three tiers -- cache, SSD and SATA -- on each blade. It uses Intel X25 E Extreme SATA SSD for meta-data operations and smaller user files, and SATA disk drives for larger files. It also supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet and InfiniBand and scales to 160 TB of raw capacity.
Emulex and IBM combine for encryption
Emulex Corp. and IBM are collaborating on host-based encryption involving the Emulex Secure Host Bus Adapter (HBA) technology and IBM Tivoli Key Lifecycle Manager. Emulex will off-load encryption onto the HBA to encrypt data in flight and at rest on disk arrays. Tivoli Key Lifecycle Manager can be used to manage the encryption keys. Emulex previewed the encryption this week at the RSA Conference Europe.
Dot Hill launches AssuredSAN backup boxes
Dot Hill Systems introduced the AssuredSAN family of disk-to-disk data protection products, including its AssuredSnap and AssuredCopy disaster recovery software. The backup appliances are 2U 12-drive SATA or SAS devices that support 4 Gbps Fibre Channel or iSCSI host connections, and can be expanded to 96 drives for 192 TB. Pricing begins at $25,600 for a 12 TB iSCSI system. Dot Hill will sell the systems through VARs.
Mimosa Systems integrates archive support for SharePoint Server
Mimosa Systems said it will add ntegrated archive support for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010. Mimosa NearPoint will support content archiving, data protection and eDiscovery support for SharePoint 2010.
Kroll-OnTrack introduces PowerControls 5.2 for SharePoint
Kroll-OnTrack began shipping PowerControls 5.2, which lets users move individual objects between Microsoft SharePoint sites and Exchange servers, adds support for SQL Server 2008, and allows customers to buy licenses up front instead of when they add a SharePoint content or Exchange database. PowerControls provides quick recovery of Exchange and can restore objects from native SharePoint backups to any machine.
Penn Foster deploys Spectra Logic deduplication for DR
Distance-learning institution Penn Foster has chosen Spectra Logic's nTier v80 deduplication appliance for its disaster recovery. Penn Foster uses the nTier v80 as a backup target for Microsoft Data Protection Manager, keeping two weeks of nightly fulls on the box and replicating data to its primary data center for DR.
Varonis Systems makes Data Classification Framework available
Varonis Systems began shipping its Intelligent Data Use (IDU) Data Classification Framework, which uses metadata to prioritize searches and determine access to specific data. The system costs $8,239 for 100 users.
ParaScale, Zmanda combine for cloud backup
ParaScale Inc. and Zmanda Inc. launched an integrated Disk-to-Cloud (D2C) backup solution, based on ParaScale's Cloud Storage platform and Zmanda Backup Server.
Sept. 11 Memorial Museum chooses Nirvanix archive
The National September 11 Memorial & Museum is using the Nirvanix Storage Delivery Network (SDN) as its main digital archive platform. The museum is being built on the World Trade Center site in New York, and will display audio, video, and photographs from the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack.
